Y2 TDo-Term 3 - School & Home Learning
10 January 2021 (by Teresa Doohan (teresa.doohan))
What are we learning during Term 3?
From Monday, we will all be following the same learning which will be posted on google classroom daily. Please understand that some lessons may have to be taught more creatively for remote learners.
RE : Advent
We will recap what happened after the birth of Jesus and discuss how the shepherds and three wise men knew Jesus was going to grow up to be a special baby.
The children will be encouraged to reflect on Jesus' life and how we can become followers of Jesus.
The children will learn that the Bible is a special book and name some of the stories in the Bible, name some of the special books used in church and the people who use them. We will retell some of the stories you have learnt about Jesus and describe how the Gospels are used by the parish family. Some children will be able to use religious words and phrases to describe the actions and symbols related to proclaiming the Gospel.
Module One: Created and Loved by God explores the individual. Rooted in the teaching that we are created by God out of love and for love., it helps children to develop an understanding of the importance of valuing themselves as the basis for personal relationships:
Unit 1 – Religious Understanding introduces children to the story from the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus welcomed all of the little children to come to Him.
The teacher will read a fun fiction book called 'Space Race' by Malorie Blackman and use each chapter to teach discrete lessons to improve reading, comprehension, word choice, punctuation and develop sentence structure. Each chapter will be read by the teacher and photographed for remote learning, so the children can read this again at home independently or with support.
We will follow the homework spelling booklet and complete a test every Friday. Please learn the Buzz Award spellings too.
Mathematics: Graphs & Time
Children develop an understanding of what is meant by data (information) and begin to gather and organise their information into pictograms or block diagrams. They will discuss this to show they can interpret the data to answer questions.
The children will recap on the hour - O’Clock and half past the hour. They will learn how many hours in a day and count in 5 minute intervals. Finally they will learn the difference between how many minutes past the hour and to the hour, before moving on to working out the duration of time using tables and word problems.
The Great Explorers unit will teach your child about the experiences of Ibn Battuta, Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong and Robert Falcon Scott. It asks the children to discuss the criteria for what makes a person significant and also consolidates their understanding of chronology by comparing the historical periods in which these great explorers lived. Range of learning activities such as: debates, roleplay, sorting and analysing, drawing and designing, as well as writing tasks, are used to encourage the children to fully understand the historical concepts taught in this unit.
The children will be designing and creating a futuristic machine for the next explorer going to space!
The children will continue to be taught PE in school. To support home learning, Miss Doohan will encourage the children to take regular breaks each day and set a creative PE/exercise lesson every Friday.
Thank you to all our parents for your support both in school and at home
